Frequently Asked Questions

What is Myopia?
Myopia is an optical condition in which the image of a distant object is focused in front of the retina, either because the length of the eye is too long or because the refractive power of the eye is excessive. This condition causes distant objects to appear out of focus.

If you have Myopia, it is recommended that you go to your optician-optometrist for regular check-ups.

What is Hyperopia?
Hypermetropia is an optical condition in which the image of a distant object is focused virtually behind the retina, either because the eye length is small or because the refractive power of the eye is poor. This condition causes near objects to appear out of focus.

If you have hyperopia, it is recommended that you go to your optician for regular check-ups.

What is Astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a condition (which can be combined with the previous ones) in which the ocular refractive power is different depending on the meridian considered. This generates a noticeable blur at all distances. It usually causes cross distortion and a clear symptom can be glare from lights, especially when driving at night.

If you have Astigmatism, it is recommended that you go for regular check-ups with your optician-optometrist.

What is Presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a defect caused by the inability to focus in near vision, which usually manifests itself after the age of 40: the lens that changes its shape to achieve near focus (the crystalline lens) loses its flexibility and stops performing its function properly.

Is it easy to adapt to progressive glasses/contact lenses?
Nowadays, thanks to a better understanding of the needs of the visual system in each case, as well as the enormous development of manufacturing techniques and materials, almost all patients enjoy a great visual comfort and a quick adaptation to progressive lenses.
However, these undoubted improvements do not guarantee the adaptation of all patients, they only make it easier. For each presbyopic individual, a complete visual examination by the optician is the essential tool for the practitioner to decide on the best lens type for a satisfactory fit. In the case of progressive lenses, it is also of vital importance the centering of the lenses once the frame of the glasses has been chosen.
At Interoptics we do a thorough visual examination to know the different needs of each presbyoptist. We have a great experience in advising and taking measurements of progressive lenses and also, we always work with the highest quality, we do not gamble.

Does computer use affect vision?
According to experts, the excessive use of digital devices can cause the so-called Visual Computer Syndrome, discomfort related mainly to vision, cervical muscles, wrists, stress and irritability.
Starting from the fact that, nowadays, we look at our cell phones an average of 50 times a day, in many occasions as soon as we get up in the morning and just before going to bed at night, we spend an average of 6 hours a day in front of a digital screen and we have an average of 6 devices per person, we cannot deny how present digital devices are in our daily life and the truth is that our eyes notice it. If you use digital devices more than two hours a day do not forget to check your eyes.
The main symptoms of computer vision syndrome are:

Computer use and eye damage

  • Blurred vision.
  • Double vision.
  • Ocular fatigue.
  • Intense light phobia.
  • Tearing.
  • Ocular dryness.
  • Red eyes.
  • Stiffness and pain in shoulders, neck, back, arms, wrists and hands.
  • Facial itching and swelling.

What guarantees should I demand when buying sunglasses?
  • Always purchase your sunglasses from an optician. Sunglasses with low or no ultraviolet protection can aggravate the harmful effects of the sun.
  • Require lenses to have filters for UVA radiation (with demonstrable guarantee).
    Prefer high quality lenses.
  • If you are nearsighted, farsighted or astigmatic, always opt for prescription sunglasses.
  • No matter your color, but there is a lens for every use, ask your optometrist for the lens that best suits your special needs.
  • Sunglasses in the appropriate prescription are recommended for any time of the year when we enjoy outdoor activities.

How do contact lenses fit?
It is the result of a complex process, which begins with a thorough optometric examination performed by the Optician-Optometrist:

  • A refractive examination will be performed, and in addition, the anterior pole parameters will be measured (corneal radii and diameter, visible iris diameter, pupillary diameter, …) and a thorough examination will be performed: the quantity and quality of tears will be assessed as well as the corneal integrity, its sensitivity, palpebral conjunctivae, conjunctival vascularization, lacrimal, palpebral glands, palpebral borders, eyelashes… The fluorogram (image obtained by instilling fluorescein in the eye) will be studied and observed with ultraviolet light lamp, the corneal integrity and lacrimal drainage will be assessed.
  • The Optician-Optometrist will select the most suitable lens for each case at his/her discretion, according to the adaptation proposal,
  • The Optician-Optometrist will teach the handling (putting on and taking off),
  • The Optician-Optometrist will give at all times the pertinent advice for the correct use (with special emphasis on cleaning recommendations) and handling of the lens,
  • The Optician-Optometrist will inform about the schedule and the mandatory periodic check-ups.
