Symptoms of exposure to digital screens
Due to the innovations made in digital screens, we spend many hours in front of computers, cell phones or tablets. The advances developed in their technology allow us to use them not only for work activities. In addition, the use of screens has also increased considerably due to social networks or other mobile applications in children and even adults. Inappropriate use of screens can induce visual symptoms such as blurred vision, eye fatigue and dry eyes. These symptoms are known as Computer Vision Syndrome and are becoming more and more frequent in the population. However, damage to vision when using cell phones, for example, does not only affect adults, but also the visual health of children, babies, young people and adolescents. Thus, for example, it is important not to attract attention with the cell phone to entertain the little ones because it harms their attention and rest. Due to the high incidence of visual symptoms related to the use of cell phones in the population, InterOptics in Alfaz del Pi provides advice on how to prevent them in babies, children, teenagers and adults.
How to prevent visual symptoms due to the use of screens?
In addition to forecasting the incidence of Computer Vision Syndrome worldwide, studies have also been conducted at the national level. According to a survey by the College of Opticians and Optometrists of Catalonia, it is estimated that approximately 70% of the population manifests symptoms related to Computer Vision Syndrome. However, the high incidence of dry eyes, visual fatigue and blurred vision are not caused by such technology, but also by the use we make of them. Since visual symptoms caused by inappropriate use of cell phones worsen the quality of life, it is important to take into account tips for prevention. Thus, for example, artificial tears should be used when the sensation of dry eyes is perceived during the use of cell phones. In addition, it is advisable to blink periodically to lubricate the ocular surface, maintain an adequate ergonomic position, good lighting, as well as an appropriate distance between the screens and the eyes. It is also necessary to take periodic breaks in distant vision to relax vision. Specifically, it is recommended to take 5-minute breaks every 30 minutes of use of digital screens such as cell phones, tablets or computers. These visual breaks are very necessary to relax accommodation because we see more and more frequently in consultation problems of accommodation or ocular stress in young patients. Also, the improper use of cell phones does not only affect young people and adults, but also children or even infants. Since the visual system of children and babies is developing during infancy, they are more vulnerable and should not be exposed to the light emitted by cell phones. In addition, their improper use is detrimental to the learning and concentration of the little ones. At InterOptics in Alfaz del Pi we recommend outdoor activities to relax the vision after prolonged use of digital screens and avoid exposing children’s vision directly to the light from the screens.
