Today we want to emphasize some interesting facts about hearing loss. Every year the WHO launches a study to assess the situation and we would like to share with you some facts you should know about hearing health.

Did you know that…

5% of the world’s population suffers from disabling hearing loss or deafness?

Only one in five people (17%) who need hearing aids use a hearing aid.

The forecast for 2050 is that 1 in 4 people will suffer some form of hearing loss and that it will begin earlier, at an earlier age.

Most infant losses are due to ear infections, such as otitis.

Unsafe listening practices are greatly affecting hearing among young people (use of headphones, noisy environments…).

Some of the factors that influence our hearing are:

    • Earwax plugs.
    • Blows or accidents
    • Noise and loud sounds
    • Medications or exposure to ototoxic chemicals
    • Nutritional deficiencies
    • Infections
    • Genetic causes

And how can we prevent hearing loss?

    • Regular hearing controls, not only in adults but also in children.
    • Genetic counseling.
    • Detection and treatment of ear disorders.
    • Hearing protection programs in the workplace.
    • Safe listening habits.
    • Regulating the use of ototoxic drugs.

Both sight and hearing are two senses that allow us to relate to each other and carry out most of our daily activities. Taking care of them is to ensure that we can stay in touch with the world and with the people we love. Don’t you think it’s worth it?
